Studio Brief 4 : Topical Illustrations

Satire & editorial

Kanye West

This idea was spun off the back of the news that Kanye was $53 million in debt

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/kanye-addresses-53-million-debt-post-grammy-rant-article-1.2533048

It's funny when his latest clothing line looks like homeless people in baggy clothes. Also the kardashians attended his yeezy 3 launch in clothes that were torn and ragged

So I decided to play on this by showing Kanye as a tramp, begging for money for the Yeezy 3 Collection. But it's also a comment on how expensive the clothes are to buy, people save up thousands for a pair of his trainers, and queue for days. They sell on ebay for thousands too.. yet it's funny he's in such debt for it, as are all average people, is it worth it?

For the colour palette I looked at his latest collection colours of salmon cream and grey.

Expanding on editorial - card design

Kris Jenner

This piece was inspired by things I'd seen on social media about how Kris dresses like her daughter Kim and whether it was a good or bad thing, is she 'mutton dressed as lamb' or is she creating a platform for other women to feel confident in their bodies and present themselves as they wish?

There's a lot in the news lately about 'slut shaming' especially towards Kim with regards to nude selfies whether they're negative or positive role models for young women today.
I made this piece based on what Kim has been wearing lately after the launch of her husbands season 3 range. Plaiting your hair seems to be in, and she is seen sporting a jumpsuit, fur coat and see through yeezy boots. I wanted to see how ridiculous Kris would look in the same attire?

My illustration of it

Expanding on editorial - Card Design

Printed Cards

Matte tester and gloss final

Matte does not work as well as gloss when I was trimming it down the edges were jagged and gloss gives off a much more professional finish.

Beyonce formation

There's been huge trends over Beyonce releasing her track Formation out of the blue, with a video alongside it that is said to be highlighting black segregation and racism.
At this moment in time, there are new snapchat filters that everyone is also going crazy over on social media, using them to manipulate celebrities faces for humour. I decided to try it out on Beyonce in this new formation video, and combine the two trends together with this illustration

My design

I am not happy with this one because it was really rushed and the concept isn't that strong. I do wish to develop Beyonce further though.

Becky with the good hair

The lyrics from Beyonce's song 'Sorry' have became iconic:

There were rumours that Rachel Roy was becky with the good hair after being associated with Jay Z in the past and then publicising this photograph on instagram saying "good hair don't care"

There were also rumours that Rita Ora could be 'becky,' to which she commented:

Did he or didn't he cheat? Was it all just a publicity and marketing stunt?

Beyonce knows

I created this image with influence of a few images I had saw of Beyonce looking at Jay's phone whilst he is texting. It makes her much more relatable as this is something most people do.
Following the speculation of the lyrics 'becky with the good hair' I decided to incorporate the phone in the right hand corner as if Jay was texting her

Trump

Donald Trump is in the news a ridiculous amount for what he believes in.
Thing's people are saying about him

Stupid things he has said

My design

Again I used trending snap chat filters as they are so current and recognisable. The comment is that he needs to get with the times! This is 2016

Lemonade

Beyonce dropped her album release 'Lemonade' and broke the internet. Critics have praised it as her best work to date; and the artistic video hints at infidelity from her husband Jay Z.

I took this one quite literal and wanted to illustrate her as a lemon, but use the iconic photograph of her next to the car in the parking lot with her head down.

I quite like this image despite being very literal you can still tell who it is

I posted the work on Linkedin and people liked the 'beyonce knows' piece the best

Context

Editorial Illustrations

I've mocked these up into newspapers to show how they could exist beyond SpiceUK's blog; but I don't think they work. They have no depth and I don't think the concept is strong enough to work within an article.

Studio Brief 4 : EOYS ideas early on - Cards informing Topical Illustrations

I want to try and perfect greetings cards again as I had touched on last year in one of the modules with my 'still got it' card range. I really want to get my head around humour on a product and I think greetings cards are great for this.

I found an old YCN brief 2012-2013 by UK Greetings

UK Greetings

Design a range of greetings cards

Background

Imagine seeing your card designs on the shelves of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waterstones, Paperchase, Clintons and independent card shops, and on window sills across the country.
UK Greetings are the UK’s market leading direct-to-retailer publisher, and manufacturer of greetings cards.
Based in West Yorkshire, we supply to the major supermarkets, high street specialists and independent retailers in the UK and internationally.
UKG have several established sub-brands, each priding itself on delivering something unique, giving UK Greetings a distinctive edge and sound reputation for diverse and eclectic product. More information on these can be found at ukgreetings.co.uk

The Creative Challenge

The greetings card industry is a very competitive market. We are constantly looking for ways to stand out from the crowd, whether this be through an exciting card format, interesting use of finishes (emboss, foil, glitter, varnish, gems, googly eyes, printed card attachments, bespoke attachments, buttons etc), or simply stunning designs that stand out from the competition.

Target Audience

16-34 year olds.

Considerations

Think about the sending situation. Why would you be sending them a card? What is the occasion? Birthday card to a friend or to a family relation? Something to say good luck, get well? Congratulations? You’re getting married? Simply ‘I love you’ or ‘I miss you’?
Who is the recipient? At what stage in their lives are they? Single, married, with children, off to college/university, passing their driving test, losing someone close to them?
Remember who you are targeting. Who is going to be actually buying the card for the recipient? Although you need to design a card that targets the recipient, it’s the person who is buying the card we need to impress and convince.
Also please note: Women buy far more cards than men.
Is the card design-led or copy-led (could be a quote, just a ‘hello’ or a longer message)?

Mandatories

You must design at least 4 cards. These will include:
  • Front page designs.
  • Designs for the inside of the cards (this may or may not include an insert).
  • A range name and logo to be printed on the back page.
  • Remember to think about the envelope colour or design.
  • Suggested card sizes – 159mm x 159mm, 121mm x 184mm, 137mm x 159mm, 110mm x 210mm but don’t let that restrict you.
  • Add 3mm bleed to all artwork supplied.

Preparation

Take a look at what is out there. Visit Paperchase, Clintons, WH Smith and local card shops. A successful range often does something different to what is already out there.
Do some research into what types of cards are being sent to this target group and why.

Deliverables, Artwork and Additional Information

For guidance on how to submit your work, please adhere to the main deliverables information which can be found here.
Any additional supporting information referenced in the brief can be found in the supporting project pack.

However, for me this seemed like I wouldn't have the freedom to be as offensive as my humour usually is. I would have to dull it down again like I did last year. I want to be able to have the freedom to be playful enough that the cards could not be sold in WHSmith or Tesco, but online instead.
When I leave University, I want an online site that sells this kind of offensive humour, and so I really want to start to get my head around that.
I think the beginning is to jot down all possible events/anniversaries/occasions. From this perhaps pick 5 and make an idea for each. Then home down on either one style and one form of humour for each of the 5, OR pick one occasion and come up with lots of ideas for the one thing.

Another thing would be to pick a theme that is culturally relevant, to the youth of today, and then use that idea to run with lots of different occasions. FOR EXAMPLE :

Pick an artist thats current such as Drake.
Use drake for different occasions, possibly playing on lyrics or on his name or the way he looks. Which is already kind of being done :

Lyrics to play with :

- I like my negro nose with jackson 5 nostrils
- When he f**k me good I take his ass to red lobster
- I might just be a black Bill Gates in the making

Beyonce the vampire slayer - ' I slay OK '

Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

- My Momma don't like you and she likes everyone
- If you like the way, you look that much you should go and love yourself (Kanye)

Formation Image

Taken from her squished snap chat selfie

Yeezy - Kanye West, whats going on in the news?

  • he loves himself
  • the ridiculous rules he gave to his models - does he give them to kim when she's taking a selfie? or giving birth?
  • hes in debt of 53 million apparently
  • asking mark zucherberg for help online
  • his new range season 3 - ridiculous see through boots
  • kris jenner trying to keep up with her kids
Tutorial with Ben Jones

Ben told me that limiting these to cards limits where the illustrations can be taken and that as they're based on topical ideas, to focus it more on that and just have them as stand alone illustrations.
This makes sense because not all of them are relevant to cards.

Therefore, I could apply them to 'Topical Illustrations' rather than just cards, and change my ideas for cards for the show.

Studio Brief 3 : Thought Bubble Zine & How I considered Secret7

Etta James - At last

So much love for this song

At last
My love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song

Oh yeah yeah
At last

The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you

I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known

Oh yeah yeah
You smiled, you smiled
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
for you are mine...

At Last

It's the ultimate happiness, falling in love, everything is colourful and clear. I need to explore that somehow.

CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue

Light, it's all over us

Like it always was

Like it always was

Shape by the clearest blue

But it's not enough

It's not enough, not enough

Just another time we're caught inside
Every open eye
Holding on tightly to the sides
Never quite learning why
You'll meet me, you'll meet me
You'll meet me halfway

Whenever I feel it coming on
You can be well aware
If ever I try to push you away
You can just keep me there
So please say you'll meet me
Meet me halfway

Tied to the shifting ground
Like I always was
Like I always was

You, were the perfect star
But it's not enough, it's not enough
Not enough, not enough

Just another time that I go down
But you were keeping up
Holding to a hope you undermined
Never to be reversed

Just another time we're caught inside
Every open eye
Holding on tightly to the sides
Never quite learning why

Whenever I feel it coming on
You can be well aware
If ever I try to push you away
You can just keep me tell me

Tell me tell me, you'll meet me
Tell me tell me, you'll keep me
Tell me tell me, you'll meet me
Will you meet me more than halfway

Shape by the clearest blue
Shape by the clearest blue

After my peer review for the Talenthouse brief this brief was abandoned due to comments that it did not reflect my practice.

Thought Bubble Zine
The idea

I got the idea from a drawing I'd done in my sketchbook over the summer of carol voderman spelling out rude words on countdown and I hear conversations from male friends about how much they fancy her. I thought it would be funny to pretend that the zine was created by a boy/man for Carol confessing their love.

For the text I've been playing around with my typography lately on other briefs with different brushes in Photoshop and I've become a fan of this one..

So I used it again for this. I wanted the writing to look quite 'masculine' if that's a thing so I stuck to capitals and kept it quite rough.

Poetry

The idea of using poetry came to me because I haven't used it within my work in a while and still wish to explore it, I think it adds to the humour and is almost like a cool rap. I initially wrote the poem in my notes on my phone like I do with all of my poems they come to me at certain times of day mostly when I'm laid in bed at night but this one came to me on a morning while I was getting ready
