SB7 : Big Kahuna - Dicaprimerch - Zines?

Another possible product I have considered as part of the Dicaprio merchandise is zines.

As I focus quite a bit on internet culture, it is quite throwaway, my humour and context is quite fast paced, fast turn around of subjects and zines are a good way of creating a product that will only last so long, that isn't high quality and the focus is more on the context and idea rather than the visual quality of the illustration. 

PROBLEM 

The only problem I face is over doing my illustrations on something so throwaway. I have battled with this in the past with greetings cards, sometimes I focus too much on making something realistic, and it loses it's humour. 

RESEARCH

How detailed do zines have to be?

I had a look on pinterest at some zines to get a better idea of how detailed zines have to be or how simple the lifework can be when trying to create some fast paced but still successful zines that may only contain 5 illustrations of the key scenes of films that have a little twist on them. 

I quite liked this interactive zine based on the film Fight club, the illustrations are simple it's more based around the quotes

This one is making me think about how I can free up my lines and play around with my text and typography so that my images don't look so realistic and is more focused on my own interpretation of character

SB7 : Big Kahuna - Influence - most memorable scenes in leonardo films

1. The revenant - When he gets inside of the horse to sleep, when he has a shoot out with tom hardy, when he's paralysed and watches his son die
2. what's eating gilbert grape - when he climbs up the pylon, dads dead, the grasshopper scene
3. romeo and juliet - the balcony, the kiss, fish tank scene, the pool scene, when he dies
4. wolf of wall street - throwing money off the boat, his dancing, dragging himself to the car, banging his chest in chant
5. inception - looking at the back of his children, trying to save her from jumping off the ledge, walking through the town as it's moving upside down and blowing up, you're waiting for a train, the spinning totem
6. great gatsby - when he is nervous to meet daisy again with the room full of flowers, throwing the party, looking at her house from his, when he dies being shot into the pool

Need to watch inception and shutter island again to decide on those, they're pretty complicated.

From this list I will decide which will be the best scenes to mock in zines.

I joined but I found a problem. When you go to upload your design, it says upload across all products which is a pain for me because I want them to be product specific for a lot of them. For example the mug idea will only make sense on a mug. 

I decided to take a look at Society6 as that was the other option, and see if I can upload to specific products on there

Slytanic as a zine was said by my peers to be too good to just be in a zine, and that zines are throwaway. Slytanic should be a hardback bound book and then I could invest more time into the illustrations

However, after further discussion we questioned the audience of the book - where would it be sold? Who would buy it? We figured the audience wouldn't be as big for a book like that compared to something that was online. It was named internet humour, and should remain on the net as part of a blog or an online shop of products.

From this I have decided to combine my dicapricards in with this idea of an online store that sells products Leo-related. This would be the card range alongside zines that put a twist on leonardo films (as the titanic would) but instead picks out key scenes to mock.

I started with the revenant. Watched it over the weekend and its very lengthy I had to split it over two days.


I started looking into leo merchandise and how playful I could be. There seems to be a lot of this out there, but not illustrated. That's what will give it the edge.

I could see these tshirts being sold in the likes of Topshop for young girls. They would work well alongside the Ivy Park gym collection by Beyonce that Topshop stock.
