End of year show & postcards

Adele Pierce
OUIL603 BA Hons Illustration

End of year show proposal form

Description: Adele Pierce at Bow Down

Adele is the founder of the brand Bow Down; selling humorous illustrated prints and products. These range from greetings cards to homeware, and are based on trends, culture and events. Keeping her work light hearted, Adele never takes life too seriously.

What I would like:

Advertisement of the brand logo BOW DOWN with a shelf of cards and iMac of the website.

I would like my logo in black vinyl 'BOW DOWN' on the wall (large) with a white shelf below to stock my cards on (big enough to fit at least 5).
I would also like an iMac on a white plinth to show the website on screen so that viewers can access each page and view my cards that are available.

Original works x5 greetings cards.
Shelf x1

Imac x1

back of postcards read:

Another idea is to do fake occasions then inside it read 'oh wait, wrong occasion… happy birthday then'

that way they will sell no matter what rather than waiting for someone with hairy pits to buy it or someone with a criminal record etc

i.e congrats on your different raced baby/miracle baby

inside.. oh wait? wrong occasion.. happy birthday then?!

Black baby

Could be like congratulations on your miracle black baby

Congratulations on sleeping with most of your family members

Cards you don't expect….

Studio Brief 5 : Threadless - Existing Designs- Leo & Kris

Idea

As an added extra my threadless idea is to do a tshirt full of leonardo DiCaprio celebrating winning the oscars.
It will include him in his various roles raising a glass, laughing cheering or in actual acceptance speeches.

Drawings

Development

Changing my mind

I decided not to do these t-shirts as I ran out of time. I would do those for another concept in the future, Dicaprio T-shirts would be great alongside all of the other produce I have created based on him, but I did not have the time to develop all of these designs. I took the dicapricard designs instead and submitted those to Threadless, using that as a platform to see how they sold on there. This would give me an insight into how successful they would be on my website. I am not sure if they will be accepted on the grounds of copyright as I remember from last year some designs of celebrities were turned down.

This meant that I had to put the message on the inside of the card as it asks for the inside view and I figured that would look better than leaving it blank.

Submissions

Proof of submission

Leo declined!

The design got declined which I was expecting, Threadless don't like to take on anything that would have copyright issues they have to battle with.
This needs to be something I look in further when putting designs on my website Bow Down.

Kris Jenner

I also decided to submit the Kris Jenner one just to see if it would get accepted or whether it's too offensive

Studio Brief 6 : Doodle for Google

It has always been a dream of mine to work for Google, because of the many perks you receive working there, and the fact they are so huge.
Luckily, two of my friends work for them in London and got in touch with a doodler there to see if there were any jobs available. The google doodler asked to see my portfolio! Amazing or what? To support this I want to include a page of a mock up of my own google illustration using the google homepage as a template. This will then give them an idea of what I am capable of and the style to expect.

Contextual References of previous Doodles

Interesting upcoming events/anniversaries I could explore :
I must say a lot of them did bore me and I wasn't sure how I would illustrate it. These subjects are not the usual thing I go for when creating work.

  • valentines day
  • einsteins theory of relativity 100 year anniversary march
  • april william shakespeare died
  • july england win the world cup
  • august the death of henry moore
  • edward 8th becomes king of the uk january
  • february bank of england is nationalised
  • wedding of prince william and kate april
  • charles darwin bday feb 2nd
  • elizabeth taylor bday 27th feb
  • 13th september 100th birthday of roald dahl
  • charles dickens bday feb 07th
  • april 23rd shakespeares bday
  • 21st april queen elizabeth 2nd bday
  • april 16 charlie chaplin bday
  • april 07th william wordsworth bday poet

Stalking Doodlers on Linkedin

I opted for Charlie Chaplin first as I think this is the one that would look the most playful, and he is iconic.

 Charlie Chaplins birthday piece

I was trying to think of how I can manipulate this image into text… so I figured that him stood upright could be the L and then I would perhaps need something else as an O..
I cut out his head and decided to use that as the first O

Typography experiment - layout

Obviously I won't use these fonts but this is me thinking about the composition and the colour of the font

For the font I looked at when was Charlie Chaplin most iconic, and found it was around the 1920s. Font at this time was Art Deco. So I looked at some of those for inspiration

and it would look a little something like this :

I then went over the text with the pen tool to make it less pixelated and more refined, and played around with the composition of the head and how spread out the text should be

I am rather pleased with the end result for my first attempt. I think not using colour was the right choice. I am not sure whether this is too 'simple' compared to the other doodles I have seen. Maybe it does not reflect Chaplins personality enough, but I like it. I'm glad I repeated the head for the O i think this was a nice touch.

Queen Elizabeth's Birthday

Another character I am interested in exploring. Outside of this brief I would illustrate the Queen doing something out of the ordinary like picking her nose, but for Google I kept it tame. She has a party hat on I think that's playful enough!

Final Image

Mocked up

I would like to have had more time working on the text for this piece I left it till last and I don't think it works very well at all. I was trying to compliment the image by taking the confetti and using that drawing style and shape to make text out of. However it looks too youthful and playful against the Queen and not as 'royal.' It was rushed I admit, and I can only put this down to poor time management.
Also managing the project on a whole focusing more on the imagery rather than thumbnailing how I can incorporate text from the BEGINNING. Planning out the image and text together as a composition rather than jumping straight into drawing the character.
