Studio Brief 4 : Topical Illustrations

Satire & editorial

Kanye West

This idea was spun off the back of the news that Kanye was $53 million in debt

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/kanye-addresses-53-million-debt-post-grammy-rant-article-1.2533048

It's funny when his latest clothing line looks like homeless people in baggy clothes. Also the kardashians attended his yeezy 3 launch in clothes that were torn and ragged

So I decided to play on this by showing Kanye as a tramp, begging for money for the Yeezy 3 Collection. But it's also a comment on how expensive the clothes are to buy, people save up thousands for a pair of his trainers, and queue for days. They sell on ebay for thousands too.. yet it's funny he's in such debt for it, as are all average people, is it worth it?

For the colour palette I looked at his latest collection colours of salmon cream and grey.

Kris Jenner

This piece was inspired by things I'd seen on social media about how Kris dresses like her daughter Kim and whether it was a good or bad thing, is she 'mutton dressed as lamb' or is she creating a platform for other women to feel confident in their bodies and present themselves as they wish?

There's a lot in the news lately about 'slut shaming' especially towards Kim with regards to nude selfies whether they're negative or positive role models for young women today.
I made this piece based on what Kim has been wearing lately after the launch of her husbands season 3 range. Plaiting your hair seems to be in, and she is seen sporting a jumpsuit, fur coat and see through yeezy boots. I wanted to see how ridiculous Kris would look in the same attire?

My illustration of it

Printed Cards

Matte tester and gloss final

Matte does not work as well as gloss when I was trimming it down the edges were jagged and gloss gives off a much more professional finish.

Beyonce formation

There's been huge trends over Beyonce releasing her track Formation out of the blue, with a video alongside it that is said to be highlighting black segregation and racism.
At this moment in time, there are new snapchat filters that everyone is also going crazy over on social media, using them to manipulate celebrities faces for humour. I decided to try it out on Beyonce in this new formation video, and combine the two trends together with this illustration

My design

I am not happy with this one because it was really rushed and the concept isn't that strong. I do wish to develop Beyonce further though.

Becky with the good hair

The lyrics from Beyonce's song 'Sorry' have became iconic:

There were rumours that Rachel Roy was becky with the good hair after being associated with Jay Z in the past and then publicising this photograph on instagram saying "good hair don't care"

There were also rumours that Rita Ora could be 'becky,' to which she commented:

Did he or didn't he cheat? Was it all just a publicity and marketing stunt?

Beyonce knows

I created this image with influence of a few images I had saw of Beyonce looking at Jay's phone whilst he is texting. It makes her much more relatable as this is something most people do.
Following the speculation of the lyrics 'becky with the good hair' I decided to incorporate the phone in the right hand corner as if Jay was texting her

Trump

Donald Trump is in the news a ridiculous amount for what he believes in.
Thing's people are saying about him

Stupid things he has said

My design

Again I used trending snap chat filters as they are so current and recognisable. The comment is that he needs to get with the times! This is 2016

Lemonade

Beyonce dropped her album release 'Lemonade' and broke the internet. Critics have praised it as her best work to date; and the artistic video hints at infidelity from her husband Jay Z.

I took this one quite literal and wanted to illustrate her as a lemon, but use the iconic photograph of her next to the car in the parking lot with her head down.

I quite like this image despite being very literal you can still tell who it is

I posted the work on Linkedin and people liked the 'beyonce knows' piece the best

Context

Editorial Illustrations

I've mocked these up into newspapers to show how they could exist beyond SpiceUK's blog; but I don't think they work. They have no depth and I don't think the concept is strong enough to work within an article.
