SB7 : Big Kahuna - Dicaprimerch - One image, all products

As I wanted to exhaustively look at product design for my site I decided to take one image and transform that across lots of different products to see what works and what doesn't and just how far and bizaare I can take it.

Tees

I took the basic leonardo dicaprio design of his head and placed it on a shirt design

I began making a pattern here but knew it wouldn't look right like that so I stopped developing it

Phone Case

Phone cases are really popular and I think would be a good starting point for products. If the design was unique enough and the brand became established I could look into selling it in other retail stores such as Topshop and Urban Outfitters. 

I actually bought the iPhone case and have it on my phone to advertise and a lot of people ask me where it is from! The quality of the case is really good and the colour doesn't differ too much from the original design. 

For this one I put my logo in the corner but I think I will reconsider this for future prints and just leave it to my website along the bottom. It draws your attention away from the design too much.

Mug

I designed my own mug and had it delivered and I am really happy with the outcome. Some of the composition is a little off which I need to be careful about but it is good to send myself these testers to see what works, what doesn't, how the colour is, the detail and ask myself would I buy it? Does it look professional?

For my first test one I had my logo on the other side. That was until I had my logo redesigned. I don't know if I will include it now I think it might put people off buying it, again I might leave it to just the website. 

Pattern

I made a leo pattern because I think this would work well on surface patterns such as wrapping paper,  curtains, wallpaper, notebooks...

Baby bibs!

I found bibs on cafepress. 

It looks ridiculous I know; but how interesting to know that it is possible! Not sure if my work suits that audience but there may be someone out there looking for dicaprio baby clothing!

Beach towel - fail

This towel design only gave you a select area in the centre of the towel to upload your design which made it look really out of place I thought you would have been given the whole towel to design on.

I won't be producing this unless it's of a singular image in the centre.

Notepad

I am so very happy with this notepad because I could really see it selling. They do other options on cafepress too for diary and blank pages which could be a sketchbook. I think these would sell really well! The only problem with this is that the delivery is really expensive so I would have to buy things in bulk for this one to be worth it. I think the pattern works better on product than the single image does.

Pyjamas - fail

The head is just floating in this one it would not allow me to make it any bigger so I am not fully happy with this, although the thought of Bow Down dicaprio pyjamas seems very tempting so I may look further into it!

PROBLEM

Again seems ridiculous but it's possible...

The problem is the context --- how does this image fit into this context? Boils down to audience - who would buy it? Would someone put their baby in a leonardo baby grow?

Apron

Cushion

CONTEXT

I really love this pattern I think this would go down a storm on the site!! I think this pattern works really well on a cushion and this makes more sense as a product than the aprons and baby clothing.

Clock

VISUAL QUALITY

Again I really like this clock but it is quite expensive as I chose the best material i.e the silver, black plastic looked cheap and nasty. I want my prodcuts to be of good quality 

Laptop Skin

Curtains

Once again the context is questionable, it would have to be raving mad leonardo fans that would buy into something like this, but it's good to consider for future designs that fit into that context better as homeware.

Shower curtain

Tote bag - fail

I'd like to consider tote bags more in the future because they're quite cheap to produce. 

EVALUATION

Overall some products don't suit the context of the work, i.e the baby clothing, but it was good to see what kind of things I could possibly be printing on. The ones I think that work best are:

• laptop skins
• notepad
• clock
• cushion
• mug
• phone cover

Most of which use the repeat pattern. These are the ones I would actually feature on the site. It's good to get an idea of the price as well
